Financial and statutory accounts

Every limited company has to file accounts. Done properly, they are also the clearest picture you will get of how your business is actually performing.

Limited companies of any size, from a single-director contractor company to an established trading business with staff.

What statutory accounts actually are

Statutory accounts are the formal year-end financial statements every UK limited company must prepare and deliver to Companies House. They normally include a balance sheet, a profit and loss account, and the notes that explain the figures.

Most small companies file abridged or filleted accounts, which means far less of your financial detail ends up on the public record. Part of our job is making sure you file the minimum the law requires rather than more.

What we do

We take your bookkeeping records, whatever state they are in, and turn them into a set of accounts that satisfies Companies House and HMRC. Where the records need work first, we say so upfront rather than discovering it in month three.

Then we sit down with you and go through the figures. Not to read the balance sheet aloud, but to point out the things that matter: where your margin actually went, which costs have crept up, whether the business can afford what you are planning next.

How this helps you

  • You stay compliant. Filed on time, in the right format, with the right disclosures for your company size.
  • You disclose less. Small companies have exemptions. We use them, so competitors and suppliers see only what they need to.
  • You understand your own numbers. A set of accounts you can read is a set of accounts you can make decisions from.
  • Your tax follows on cleanly. The accounts feed straight into your corporation tax return, so nothing is done twice.

Questions

Common questions

What happens if I file late?
Companies House issues an automatic penalty that starts at £150 and rises the longer accounts are outstanding. It doubles if you file late two years running. Persistent failure can lead to the company being struck off and directors disqualified.
Do I need an audit?
Most small companies do not. Audit thresholds are set by turnover, balance sheet total and employee numbers, and the great majority of owner-managed businesses sit well below them. If you do need one, we will tell you and help you find a registered auditor.
My bookkeeping is a mess. Is that a problem?
It is very common and we would rather know early. We will quote for tidying it up as a separate piece of work so you can see exactly what that part costs, rather than absorbing it invisibly into a bigger fee.
Can you take over from my current accountant?
Yes. We write to them for professional clearance and your records, and handle the handover. You do not need to have an awkward conversation.
