Business start-up

The decisions you make in your first few months shape everything that follows. We help you get the foundations right from day one, drawing on experience with businesses of every size.

First-time founders, people leaving employment to work for themselves, side projects becoming real businesses, and established owners launching something new.

Experience beyond the start-up stage

Our team has worked with and advised organisations of many sizes, from sole traders to established companies with large finance functions. That experience is valuable at the very start. We have seen how successful businesses are set up, how they grow, and which early decisions cause problems later on.

We bring that perspective to your business from the beginning, so you build on solid foundations rather than having to fix things once you are busy.

Choosing the right structure

Sole trader, partnership or limited company is usually the first big decision. Each has different implications for tax, personal liability and paperwork, and the right answer depends on your expected profits, your plans for growth and how you intend to take money out of the business. We work through the numbers for your situation and explain the trade-offs in plain English.

What we do

We handle the practical set-up: forming your company if that is the right route, registering with HMRC for self assessment or corporation tax, and for PAYE and VAT where needed, and setting up bookkeeping software from the start so your records are right from day one.

Then we help you plan ahead: a simple budget and cash flow forecast, a clear view of what tax will be due and when, and the records you need to keep. If you are raising finance, we prepare the figures lenders and investors expect to see.

How this helps you

  • You start on the right footing. The right structure and registrations from the outset, with nothing to unpick later.
  • You know what is coming. Tax bills and deadlines planned for, not discovered.
  • You benefit from wider experience. Advice shaped by what we have seen work in businesses large and small.
  • You have support as you grow. The same team stays with you as your business develops.

Questions

Common questions

Should I be a sole trader or a limited company?
It depends on your expected profits, the risks involved in the business and how you plan to take money out. A limited company keeps your personal assets separate from the business and can be more tax-efficient at higher profit levels, but it comes with more administration and public reporting. We work through the numbers with you before you decide.
Can you set up my limited company?
Yes. We can form the company with Companies House, prepare the paperwork and set up your registrations with HMRC, so you are ready to start trading.
When do I need to register with HMRC?
A new limited company must tell HMRC it has started to trade within three months. If you are self-employed, you must register for self assessment by 5 October after the end of the tax year in which you started. We make sure nothing is missed.
Can you help me raise finance?
Yes. We prepare the forecasts and financial information that lenders and investors expect, and can advise on schemes such as SEIS and EIS where they apply to your business.
