Payroll, CIS and pensions

Payroll is unforgiving. It has to be right, it has to be on time, and your staff notice immediately when it is not.

Any business with employees, single-director companies paying themselves a salary, and contractors or subcontractors within the Construction Industry Scheme.

Real Time Information

Every time you pay someone, HMRC has to be told on or before the payment date. That is RTI, and it applies whether you have forty staff or you are a single director paying yourself once a month.

Late submissions attract penalties, and repeated lateness escalates them. This is the most mechanical part of running a business and also one of the easiest to get wrong when you are busy.

Auto-enrolment

Workplace pensions are not optional. Every employer has duties: assessing staff, enrolling those who qualify, making contributions, handling opt-outs correctly and re-enrolling periodically. The Pensions Regulator issues fixed penalties that escalate daily.

CIS

If you work in construction, the Construction Industry Scheme adds another layer. Contractors must verify subcontractors, deduct at the right rate and file monthly returns. Subcontractors need those deductions properly recorded or they overpay tax and wait a long time for it back.

How this helps you

  • Staff are paid correctly and on time. Payslips, deductions and year-end documents all handled.
  • RTI is never late. Submitted on or before each payday, every time.
  • Pension duties are met. Assessment, enrolment, contributions and declarations of compliance.
  • CIS deductions are right. Verified rates, monthly returns, and subcontractor statements issued.

Questions

Common questions

I am the only director. Do I still need payroll?
If you take a salary, yes. You need a PAYE scheme and RTI submissions like any other employer. Many directors take a salary at a level that is efficient against the National Insurance thresholds, which still has to be reported.
What happens if I miss an RTI submission?
HMRC charges a penalty based on the number of employees, and it applies per month. Repeated failures increase the amount, and persistent non-filing can trigger a compliance check.
Do I have to offer a pension to everyone?
You must assess every member of staff. Those meeting the age and earnings criteria must be enrolled automatically, though they can choose to opt out afterwards. Others have the right to ask to join.
Can you take over an existing payroll mid-year?
Yes. We need the year-to-date figures and your PAYE reference, and we handle the transfer so nothing is lost in the changeover.
